Doncaster Open Day News

Doncaster's Open Day was a great success last Saturday with about 460 athletes competing from all over Victoria.  Thankfully the weather was kind to us this year (it poured last year).  There was plenty of good competition on the day, coffee brewing, snow cones and a very special visitor in a red suit. Click here to see Action Photos of the day.

World Champion Athlete Tamsyn Lewis and Jade and Nick from AV, also dropped by to present Doncaster with a $1000 cheque for equipment.  This was the prize for an AV competition for Little Aths centres that have dual registered athletes. Tamsyn signed the Athletics Victoria cards and posed for photos with our young ahtletes. She showed interest in all the children and was an absolute delight. Click here to see photos of Tamsyn and some of the athletes.

AND - the fireworks were fantastic!! The boys from Airwize never disappoint the crowd.

Thank you to our Open Day Co-ordinators, Andrew Pywell, Jack Talia and Gerard Hayes and their teams of workers and all the parents who did duty on the day.  A day like this doesn't just happen and there was much work behind the scenes to make this day a success.  Well done!

Friday 30th October 2009 - Interclub T&F Competition U6 to U15 - 6:00pm start

This will be a program One and the first twilight event of the season for all athletes U6 to U15.

  • Calling On Track Athletes - Although it's exciting for our On Track Athletes to compete with the big kids, it can also be a bit daunting for both parents and athletes.  When the announcer calls events for Under 6, 7 and 8's, please take your little one to the "On Track Banner" which is at the starting end of the front straight.  Unlike Saturday morning On Track sessions where we encourage you to participate, at Track & Field events only Officials and those on duty are allowed out on the track or the inside of the arena, so we must ask you to watch from the stands or from the outside of the track.

  • Correct Club Uniforms including registration patches is compulsory.  Athletes incorrectly attired will be turned away from competition.

  • Safety for our Athletes - Do not cross the front straight - Cross over points are behind the 100m start line for vortex, high jump and javelin and the club house side of the finish gates for shot put.  The cross over points will be marked by cones.  Access to the back straight is around the outside of the track and NOT through the centre of the arena.  The centre of the arena is for Officials only. Think of the track like a road and look before crossing

  • Some of the clubs will run barbeques so please give them your support.

  • Please note there is no alcohol allowed at the track.

  • There is NO Athletics on Saturday 31st October 2009

Box Hill Invitation Relays

It was an unpredictable spring day at Box Hill on Sunday - sunny, a few drops of rain, windy, cold and sunny again but none of this stopped our athletes from having a fun time. For some of our younger athletes, this was the first experience of passing the baton in competition. Box Hill is an annual event and is the lead up to the Eastern Metropolitan Region Relay Competition, which will be held here at Doncaster on Sunday 15th November.  Thanks to our coaches and team managers for helping to make this day a success.

Aimed at easing the transition to senior athletics, Dual Athletics is a cheap and easy way for Little Athletes to experience the fun of the big leagues in Athletics Victoria club competition.  Dual Athletics membership is available to any VLAA member aged between 11 and 15 years (as at 31st December 2009), at the small cost of $25. The senior athletics will be held here at Doncaster on Saturday afternoon.  If you are U12 - U15, you can become a dual athlete with Athletics Victoria and be eligible to compete at these AV events - See Registration Information

Safety for our Athletes

It’s really important that parents and athletes do not cross the front straight after 10:00am on a Saturday or at all on a Friday evening. This is to prevent injuries and protect the health of our athletes.

Cross over points are behind the 100m start line and the club house side of the finish gates.  Access to the back straight, shot put, high jump and javelin is around the outside of the track and NOT through the centre of the arena.  The centre of the arena is for Officials only. Think of the track like a road and look before crossing.

Victorian All School T&F Championships - Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November 2009

This event will be at Olympic Park and is run by Athletics Victoria for school athletes in age groups U 14, U15, U16, U17 and U18.   (there are no qualifying standards for this event)

As this is an AV event individuals need to look after their own entries.   Entry Form - Closing date for entries is 22nd October 2009

See Athletics Victoria Website for more information

Relay Coaches Forum

Recently the 09/10 relay coaches got together and planned for the upcoming season. There was a session of on track training on how to change batons the ‘Doncaster’ way, with demonstrations by Conrad, Josh and Sam from last year’s successful Under 13 team. Having braved the cold for long enough coaches moved inside and discussed the season.

Some of the highlights for the new season include:

  • Tee shirts, which can be worn as warm up/training tops, are to be provided to all athletes free of charge thanks to a generous sponsorship from ‘Sportslab’ at Westfield Shoppingtown. Make sure you visit them for all the latest in aths gear.

  • Preparations and pre season training is about to start for some age groups so make contact with your coach to find out if your team is to train in September.

§  In addition to relay training and general training from 4.30-5.30pm on a Wednesday night, some coaches have offered extra training times, and squads will be set up of interested athletes to train for their specific events on other nights/weekends. More information about these squads can be obtained at registration day from from your club representative.

§  ‘Get to know your coach’. Click on the coaching page to see a profile of your relay coach – find out their interests, coaching experience, qualifications, contact details and lots more.

§  Relay Dates: Box Hill (25/10/09) Region @ Doncaster (15/11/09) State (13/12/09)

VLAA Clubs On-Line Email

For those athletes who recently received the VLAA "clubs online" email in regards to the "on-line registrations", the Doncaster Centre is one of those Centres mentioned that will not offer this facility at the present time. Software issues with Doncaster having 6 clubs needs to be sorted out.  Please save your username and password for registering for Clinics and for future use.
